Bird course for beginners - Part 1

August 13th, 2010

On Saturday, 7th August 2010 a small group of enthusiastic birders met at Lagoon Lodge to begin the long journey to become ‘a birder’.
Klaus Achtzehn, owner of Lagoon Lodge and one of the most accomplished birders on the North Coast, addressed our group.  He introduced Dumisane Mbonambi, our local trained guide and stressed the need to group birds into their respective families for quick identification.  ie raptors such as eagles and hawks being grouped apart from the swallows !  We were amazed to learn that the swallows and swifts were not closely related and that one can tell them apart since the swift cannot walk, only flies and hangs while swallows are able to ’sit’ on the telephone line.  Martins who are also grouped with swallows are brown in colour and found in Europe.
Notes from the course follow.

Snake talk and Demonstration - July 2010

August 13th, 2010

Barn Swallow picnic - March 2010

August 13th, 2010

Hi all,
This is the first of the events planned for the year and hopefully it will start drawing attention to the activities of the Conservancy. We also see it as a means of bringing family together and invoking a spirit of community. Being the first event it is hugely important to make it a success and so encourage everyone to keep attending further planned events. Apart from being there yourselves, please make every effort to invite others and encourage the whole picnic/sundowner experience. This event is in a sense reliant on the Barn swallows playing their part and as we all know this might not materialise and so when advertising this our emphasis should be on the family sharing time and the beauty of the surrounds.
Notices have been placed at the Cafe, the ZBRRA notice board and the Ski-boat Club plus 360 notices will be handed to pupils at the Darnall Primary plus Sunshine Pre-primary a week before the event. I will also request Wendy and Engela Wium to send to their resident lists. If there are visitors in Zinkwazi at the time [the Wed before the Easter weekend] then hopefully they will also participate.
Regarding forthcoming events, I have sent 2 e-mails to the Natal Sharks Board [after being advised by the responsible person to do so] without the courtesy of a reply yet but will continue to follow this up. I have also been struggling to obtain the number of a professional [Jasper Pons is certainly a candidate]  who can give us a talk on local snakes. Should you have any suggested contacts please let me know and I will follow it up.
I will be away from tomorrow arriving back in Zinkwazi the day before the event and I will be placing direction signage on the Nkwazi Rd on the day. The whole event is taking place on the Clewlow estate and we thank them for their hospitality and willingness to accommodate us.     Ryan will kindly prepare the ‘picnic area and decks and I see no reason why it should not be a special experience for many. Klaus will give a short introduction to the evening and the background to the Barn Swallow experience. It will also be an opportunity to highlight some of the forthcoming events.
I have attached the ad. Please repond should you have any thoughts or suggestions although certain arrangements can’t be changed.
Regards
Cliff Hatt

Cliff has earned quite a name for himself since ……….no swallows pitched, one of the revellers fell off a rotting deck which collapsed into the water and serveral fell into holes on the dark walk home………..but WE ALL WANT A REPEAT  !!
Several braziers and braai drums have been collected - thanks to Howard Balcomb  - and when the weather warms up, we plan to have an evening of ‘Fireside Tales’ in the same magnificent venue on the banks of the Zinkwazi river.
Sincere thanks to Ryan and the Clewlow family for letting Zinkwazi enjoy their bush

Reports - June 2010

Subject: Re: water quality
To Mike Newton, MM iLembe
Dear Mike
I had assurance from you that you were aware of our water quality and later a circular from Joat, that Mark and his staff were looking into the problem of water quality.  It really is shocking - not palatable.  Wherever I go in Zinkwazi I am asked what iLembe are doing about this as the residents are loosing patiencs.
Please let me know
Wendy
hi Wendy, we have had a team out there to look at it - i am waiting for a
report on what we can do to assist with the problem. once i have something i
will revert back to you on the matter.
Thank You,
Mike Newton

Thanks for prompt response Mike - will advise the community of your intention
Wendy

Dear Garth – (iLebmbe)
On Friday 25th June, 2010 I reported a leak in a servitude between 18 and 20 Panorama.  I trust this was repaired.  I was then reminded that the huge hole which exists at the entrance of that servitude and which was repeatedly reported as a dog fell into it and the owner of an adjacent property heard the barking and saved its life,  - this hole has not been repaired yet.  The
report was sent to iLembe about 6 months ago as urgent.
Please can you send somebody to check all servitudes where there are meters and to make sure that there are no dangerous pits.   I would like to know when this is to be done so that I can be available to ensure that the staff
find the excavations.
I notice too that at 11 Panorama a deep rut was cut across the road to pay water by iLembe and this has not been repaired.
Lastly I attach my May report as only 2 of the items have been attended to -
At 145 Nkwazi dr is not complete - an attempt was made to close up but a large hole still remains.  Thank you for the removal of tar at the side of the road at the end of Panorama.  The state of all the other items are unchanged since May.
I would be very pleased to do an inspection of Zinkwazi with you this week.
Kind regards
Wendy

Dear Nollie – Dept of Civils Eng
I trust that funds are shortly to be available from the new budget -  which I understand dates from July 1st - next week ! to do major repairs to our Zinkwazi village roads.  Can I assume that the long promised repair of eroded tar roads is on the cards ?
At our last meeting you explained that this would be a more improved ’strip method’ and an improvement on the past method of repair
Please can you update me on this
I look forward to hearing from you
Kind regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy
For the 2010/2011 financial year capital budget only R 1 000 000-00 was allowed for and that is going to be used for speed humps in all the wards. Road maintenance will come out o the maintenance vote for pothole repairs and bigger areas were required.
Thanks
Nollie

Parks and Grounds dept
Hello Che -
I am disappointed to see that removal of dry cut braches of the milkwood have come to a halt  - is this correct or are your staff not aware that more branches clutter the verge on the corner of Glen and Nkwazi dr.

Please update me on the Pereskia removal.  I note that nothing was done at the entrance to the village last week. Billy explained yesterday that the task has been given to a contractor to carry out.  Please let me know when he is to commence work.  The Ridge have approved the burning on their land in the corner.

At the Shelley road end of Magai there is a large pile of dry branches which have been there for at least 6 months.  Please ask your garden refuse staff to remove these

In the same area, 37 Magai, a bougainvillea is pulling down the telephone pole and should be removed altogether before it breaks the line.

Last but not least I would like Sheila to re-send letters to all those who she notified to clear their properties of invader plants.  The same properties are once more all covered in Castor oil which is about to throw seed all over adjacent vacant property.  If she does not have the list please ask her to phone me
I look forward to hearing from you
Kind regards
Wendy

31st May2010

Mr Garth Doby
iLembe

Dear Garth

Thank you for inspecting the issues unresolved at Zinkwazi with me today. As you requested I here submit the following report

1. Sharksboard road is the responsibility of iLembe. A contract with Tongaal Huletts states this.  It is the road at the entrance to the village. The condition of the road has repeatedly been reported as a problem for the following reasons :-
1i)         The road has not been maintained but used by iLembe tankers to deliver water to the reserviors. A substantial amount of the water does not reach its destination due to the swaying of the tanker on the bad road. The Ridge residents living in close proximity complain about the noise of the tanker ploughing up the hill and are afraid that if it goes out of control on the slippery road it could knock down the ridge wall and crash into adjacent houses
1ii)        There is no drainage off this road. The sand washes down into Nkwazi dr and banks up at the entrance of the village causing an obstruction in the main road.

 t

2. Panorama drive
At the very south end of Panorama iLembe pipes repeatedly burst and after two years of reports the large open pit - has been closed.   Please note that the old tar and stone has not been removed by the contractor responsible for the work.

3.         102 Glen dr
A water leak six months ago left an excavation uncovered. This was surrounded by tape and nobody returned to resolve the problem

4          145 Nkwazi dr
Approximately a month ago this ‘grey water’ pipe was closed off. The large drum and lid thrown aside and the area surrounded by red marking tape. No effort has been made to remove the discarded structures or to close the large pit

5          Concrete pipe cnr Flamingo/Glen
This large concrete pipe protrudes at an angle from the earth. It is on a verge to be used by pedestrians to walk in safety. Pls explain its use and why it should interrupt the pavement.

6          Shelley/Magai

A burst iLembe water pipe resulted in the wash away of the corner of the road and resulted in a crater large enough to house a motor vehicle. After a year of reports a contractor by the name of ‘Ngema’ made a flying visit and dumped some tar onto a corner of the road and disappeared for good. We are left with a large depression of the verge on the left as one goes to the beach access which needs soil to level it out and a corner which should be tarred

7          Rusted installation on Sandy Cove
A large rusted pipe of metal protrudes from the earth on this verge – another obstruction to the flow of pedestrian traffic or to congest the verge used by fishermen to reach the beach. Pls explain its use and why it should not be submerged or removed

8          Broken manhole or pump cover – Sandy cove
Once more an obstruction on the pavement, which could be dangerous to pedestrians or vehicles on the verge of Sandy cove.   A more substantial and stable cover is necessary to withstand the weight of a vehicle or this should be removed

9          93 Nkwazi dr
This is the lid of what was a ‘grey water’ submerged conservancy tank, closed by Vim Pillay at least a year ago. I requested of Daniel Pillay of Civils, that a heavy concrete lid be made and fitted. A flimsy ill-fitting discard was placed over the 5 meter hole – a serious danger to animal pedestrian and vehicle alike.

Kind regards

For Carlos Mendes
Reported storm water drain/servitude and road verge problems – March 2010

1          Glen Dr
On cnr of Glen/Kort is a storm water drain that has been broken for years

2          Cnr of Glen/Aloe. A grid is needed over this large opening to the storm water drain as dangerous

3          At 56 Glen water is discharged from property into rd to form constant pool which erodes the tar

4          Cnr of Glen and Flamingo the storm water drain is clogged with sand and grass

Palm Drive
1          The storm water flows on the wrong side of the street in Palm Drive causing
road water to flow down the drives of 4 Palm Drive and 2 Palm Drive when it
rains.  A storm water drain should be on the uphill side of the road and
water should not be allowed to flow across the road and then down the
downhill side of the road and enter the driveways of  private property

2          Cnr of Palm and Rooibekkie. The drain is not supported, and dangerous

Aloe drive
I have a storm water problem at 4 Aloe Dr.
No drainage at all on south side of the road.
this results in all water and silt running down the road into No 2 and 4 Aloe drive

Magai Drive

1          Three drainage culverts outside 5 are filled to overflowing with sand . I doubt they could ever be made functional

2          A steep stretch of road starting at 3 and ending at the end of number 5 Magai
There is no kerbing and the water just streams down washing anything that isn’t tarred/paved away.  It is pointless for us to try and neaten the pavement as the erosion on the pavement is serious.  We also have a stormwater pipe on the pavement which dispels water from our roof and it has been ridden over so many times that it is pointless repairing it again.

3          Please report the potholes and the huge repair needed at the corner of Shelley & Magai

4          No pavement along Magai at all and bushes encroaching into the road. Telephone lines have been pulled down by bougenvillea on right hand side of photo

Nkwazi Dr & Kingfisher

1          One area of Nkwazi drive that needs attention is the north side pavement from the Kingfisher rd to the beach, they have put a storm water drain there, but the pavement has partially washed away, partly due to ESKOM or TELKOM putting in cables.  Impossible for the children from Sugarbay  to walk in safety to the beach along Nkwazi as pavement non-existant

2          Section of Nkwazi from ArtegoBay to 61 - drain culverts incorrectly
positioned to take water off the roads.

3          King fisher has the same problems as well as nearly all drains are blocked.

4          Kingfisher has had waterleaks and needs some tlc and repairs to the surface.

5          Could you include 73/75 Nkwazi Drive on your list of storm water problems reported 2 yrs ago

6          the stormwater drain in servitude 72/74 Nkwazi was on the budget for this year, according to the undertaking given by Nollie Rabie. It is still precarious and badly done by unsupervised and certainly unqualified labourers. (Wendy will bear me out on that!)

7          Please add our servitude 72/74 Nkwazi dr to the problems you are addressing.  Repairing it regularly has cost the municipality, insurers, the neighbours and ourselves probably the best part of R200,000 or more.  The next very big rain will probably wash it away again.  There seems to be two fundamental problems:
a).  It is the sole source of drainage for a large part of Glen Drive and cannot cope.  The drain entrance is behind us in Glen drive.
b).  The sheer steepness causes a torrent of water which so far has proved to be unstoppable.

Suggest servitude be closed permanently and a better drainage plan be done for Glen Drive

8          At 93 Nkwazi dr there is a dangerous deep hole which KDM have covered recently with a fragile looking lid which can be removed or squashed when driven onto. Pls place a concrete cover to this.

9          Sand is constantly washed down into Nkwazi dr from properties 46-56 Nkwazi dr. We need a grader to move the bank of soil back into the properties

10         Storm water drain support cracked opposite 75 Nkwazi dr

11         Cnr of Nkwazi/Springvale rd. Tar eroded corner

12         Kingfisher rd
We have no pavement here. The road is cluttered with branches encroaching and rubbish left behind by KDM ongoing and stormwater and servitude to the river blocked.

13         A blocked stormwater drain between no 4 and 3 Aquila on 30 Nkwazi drive. It is where the street meets with the pavement.

Sunbird Rd off Nkwazi dr  - two drains

Servitudes
Servitude 23/25 Glen
servitude between Glen and Panorama Drives that runs up the side of no. 23 Glen. After some time repair work was done on this, but the pipe has now burst higher up, and a continuous stream of water is running down the servitude.

Servitude 20/22 Panorama – eroded large holes/dongas from storm water blow out. Dog trapped in this hole overnight. Pipes exposed at Glen dr entrance. Dangerous servitude which must be repaired or closed as not walk-able – reported at least a year ago.

Servitude 28/31 Magai
Property wall fallen over due to sand build up

Servitude 17/19 Glen
The servitude 17/19 Glen needs filling. Frequent ‘wash aways’ have eroded the walk way.

Servitude Sandy clove
Steps disintegrating – now dangerous.

Garden Refuse left on verges
pic shows garden refuse that has been waiting for collection for 4 weeks now and in the background a typically unfinished , unsightly job at a broken water pipe excavation, hurriedly fixed and left with so-called danger tape marking the spot - this job was done more than 8 weeks ago !
It would seem that most of the jobs/repairs done in this town by the ‘responsible body’ is always left unfinished and we are continually subjected to unsightly remains that just serve to make the village exactly that - unsightly!

ZINKWAZIBEACH RATEPAYERS & RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION   MINUTES OF MEETING

Meeting:                     Committee Meeting
Date & Time:             22nd April 2010
Venue:                        7 Idwala, home of W Balcomb - at 17H30
Present Neil Wallace (Chair), Klaus Achtzehn, Glen Middleton, Richard Armstrong, Nic Ellender, Allan Werth (co-opted) Wendy Balcomb.
Apologies Margo Thiel, Craig du Bernard

1          Minutes of meeting January 2010 were accepted

2          Neighbourhood Watch – Glen Middleton
Incidence of crime was improved since the arrest of some gang leaders. Holiday makers were still the major targets due to their careless habits on holiday.
Richard said that due to the economy and several other factors several NW members who in the past made regular payment to the NW were not doing so.     JG,WHand GM had ‘knocked on doors’ and had a disappointing response from people who asked ‘what is in it for me’
ZBRRA was by far the largest contributor to the fund and the NW could not exist without ZBRRA. Neil stressed the need to limit the funding from ZBRRA to be for infrastructure and maintenance of the fence.
With another 6 months left till end of this financial year, ZBRRA had already contributed the same. RA said that amount as was contributed to NW for the whole of the past financial year – approx R48 thousand. Nic Ellender suggested fund raising by hosting an event.
RA said more needed to be done to raise funds and a good fund raiser was a golf day.
3          Financial report – R Armstrong
Richard said the financial position of ZBRRA was healthy with a surplus or R103 thousand. Most members paid up the full amount at the beginning of the year, several paid regularly on a monthly basis but there were 14 people on our books who would not payat all. Neil stressed that ZBRRA were prepared to pay for infrastructure costs. We did not want to get into the position where ZBRRA were spending more on security than the NW. Already R80,000.00 more will have been spent this year than last year.    Major expenses were WB salary and her motor vehicle costs and the ‘donation to security’ or contribution to ZNW for monthly fence maintenance, additional guards etc. The Eskom quote for connection of the new light at the entrance to the village and the deposit to be paid was more than R8000.00. The Ski Boat Club had offered to assist in payment of half of this. NW suggested that they pay the deposit and connection fee and ZBRRA pay for the ongoing cost of power to be supplied monthly. NW to speak to Nigel Simmonds about this.
4          Report back on KDM
Recent reports in NCC indicated that Louis Luyt was leading the Ratepayers in the Ballito area towards declaring a dispute with KDM to withholding rates. The committee were not in favour of this as ZBRRA had built up a good relationship with the officials in KDM and the situation was not hopeless as in some areas. Our local residents would not be in a position to run our own service delivery, and for that reason we should continue encouraging good relationships through communication.
The new budget was out. WB to invited Clr Ann Mc Donelle (DA) to give us her view on the new budget.
AIP project still in progress with 3 new properties to be cleared and all owners of previously cleaned properties to be notified that from now on they were to pay for services..
WB has started making compost from garden refuse dropped off by garden services. Caretakers to be encouraged to do the same. WB to invite staff to a talk on same at nursery. Nursery needs to be extended to the east and fenced. Gary Prentice offered to supply poles and fencing. Indigenous trees to be grown on this land.
WB to enquire from Richard Penn Sawers if registration of nursery is necessary.

5          Membership
Approximately 30 of the 189 members ignore monthly statements for subs. It was decided that the committee were to assist Wendy by phoning those who had not paid at all. Wendy is to give each of the committee a list of names with contact details.
Nic suggested that some members would not mind paying double the annual subs of R1200 as this had not been increased in 6 years. Another list to be drawn up of those who pay readily and for the members to be asked how they feel about the increased subs.

6          Role of Chairman
Neil said that at the last AGM he had announced that this was his last year but since he may be living in Zinkwazi from June, he would be available should there be no other offers and the committee wish him to continue for a further year. It was important to have a chairman who was not involved commercially in the village and one who could stand above the pettiness of local politics. The committee welcomed Neil’s offer

7          Lease of Junction Offices
WB had written to Darren van Rensberg stressing the urgency for a lease for the Junction offices where conflict had recently resulted due to lack thereof.
Neil to write a formal letter to KDM

8          65 Nkwazi dr – adoption to be overturned.
A notice from KDM was posted on the verge of 65 Nkwazi dr proposed to overturn the previous adoption of a change in zoning from ‘special residential’ to ‘intermediate’ for the lagoon front property. Adjacent property owners had been to the high court to ensure this. Letters from ZBRRA and Zinkwazi Conservancy had been written to KDM in support of the amendment - ie in support of only ‘special residential’ zoning being retained in this area.

9          Notice Board and Website
In accordance with a request from G Barnard (acting manager of the Junction) the ZBRRA notice was to be removed and all future ZBRRA notices to be placed on a board at the entrance to the Junction offices. Since this new board has not yet been erected it has been decided that WB is to move the old aluminium board to a suitable place in the parking area and to once more make use of it for ZBRRA news.
The Website is updated periodically but not used enough by members

10        General
Basket sellers from Manguzi visit seasonally to sell baskets and their accommodation has been the property on cnr of Seagull and Nkwazi dr and more recently they and their children have taken up residence in the Municipal yard. Several complaints from local residents in the area.
Richard asked why the basket sellers had been permitted to sleep in the municipal building at 145 Nkwazi dr. WB replied that through intervention of Cnl Pakkies the KDM had been persuaded to do this but that Billy of Parks had said that once Nico Maree was back from leave it was understood that they would be evicted as he had made it clear that this was illegal. WB to write letter to NM asking for clarification on the legality of this.
Signage AllEstate agents ‘for sale’ boards had been removed by agents when they heard that their illegal signage was to be confiscated by KDM. The village is looking neater and many complimentary remarks indicated that residents do not want signage. For sale on vacant land only is permissible through application. No ‘sold’ signs are permissible.
Several letters received indicating that the recent large boards erected at the Junction are displeasing to the community. WB to ask Tarvesh of KDM to visit the Junction and to assist the tenants to be complaint in this.
Street lights Glen was thanked for the very difficult task of marking street lights which were malfunctioning. WB reported these regularly to Eskom.
Budget Nic said that in the past the TLC were granted money for the Conservancy from the budget. He suggested that ZBRRA request money this month for Security and Conservation (AIP project) to be set aside for this in the Municipal budget. Neil added that water reticulation, storm water, road and street light upgrade should be included.
Thanks Neil thanked Allan Werth for his constructive ideas and encouraged him to be involved in reporting beach problems as he often visits the beach. Allan offered his wife, Sarah’s services as an editor.

Closure – the meeting ended at 19H30

Conservancy minutes - 21st April, 2010

August 3rd, 2010

ZINKWAZI CONSERVANCY
MINUTES OF THE COMMITTEE MEETING
held at Lagoon Lodge at 9H30 on Wednesday 21st April 2010.
Present: Klaus Achtzehn (Chair), Neil Wallace, Cliff Hatt, Peter Saville , Bing Comrie, Don Cowie, Wendy Balcomb
Apologies: Richard Penn-Sawers, Fokko Fokkens
Peter Coulon – Land and Conservation Manager of the Elan Group, was welcomed to the meeting.
Minutes of the Conservancy meeting held on January 27th 2010, were proposed by Neil Wallace and seconded by W Balcomb
1          Events
Cliff Hatt was thanked for the Barn swallow outing he arranged on Clewlow’s farm, which was a great success. Approximately 100 people enjoyed the social event despite no swallows being seen. Future events planned by Cliff were a visit from Sharksboard, and a talk/demo on snakes of the area, the Inter-tidal zone (Jasper Pons) and the Glacial rocks (Tony Ardington). W B suggested that the meetings should be advertised in the NCC to encourage membership
2          Membership
There seems to be a sense of complacency amongst local farmers. They should be encouraged to join the Conservancy as a show of support. Their knowledge of environmental issues would be an asset to the association. Warren Clewlow to be asked to assist with motivation. Farmers to be included - Nigel Lovett, Bully de Riqueberg, Mike Barense, Dave Clewlow, Tony van Raalte.
Peter Goss and Mike Zunckel are members of ZBRRA and therefore already members of ZC.

3          Working for the Coast
The funds were ready for implementation by EzemveloKZNWildlife in March. As EzemveloKZNWildlife had however lost their projects manager, they were not prepared to start, as they could not guarantee the required standard of execution.
It has since transpired, that Wildlands Trust may take over the project management, in conjunction with other mini-projects for which funds are available from i.a. Conservation International. This looks very encouraging as a much bigger, more comprehensive approach could be taken. This new scenario does however mean a further delay of some months.

4          Stewardship
Our area is one of the top 10 identified provincially as critical for the stewardship biodiversity protection programme. All desktop preparation and mapping has been completed. Peter Saville reported that he had been approached to formally sign up for Stewardship. Since the document did not show any benefits for him as the landowner he did not sign. Concern was expressed, that the promotion of the stewardship idea is not being well handled in the field. This is to be taken up with Ezemvelo experts.
It was agreed, that we should re-focus our Stewardship approach on the critical stakeholders before we continue with other landowners. Once the critical stakeholders are on board the smaller pockets of suitable land may be easier to incorporate, through setting up benefits workshops etc.
5          Amalgamation with Blythedale Conservancy
The Blythedale Conservancy is no longer active. Their representatives Bing Comrie and Fokko Fokkens have expressed the wish to be incorporated into the Zinkwazi conservancy. Their geographical area is similar to ours and stretches from the Nonoti in the North to the Umvoti in the south and from the sea in the east to beyond the R102 in the west. Their area is a natural extension of our area. The amalgamation was agreed to by all present. The provisional name of the amalgamation, to be registered with the conservancies association, will be ZINKWAZI BLYTHEDALE CONSERVANCY. Membership would be according to the Zinkwazi conditions.
6          General
Peter Coulon agreed to give a presentation on the land management of the Elan Blythedale development at our next meeting. He also suggested, that we submit a news release about the combined conservancy for the Elan Group newsletter. Pete Saville suggested we utilise the existing Zulu Roots material.
Wendy Balcomb reported on the continued progress with AIP, as well as the nursery.

Apologies: Richard Penn-Sawers, Ryan Dematteis, Rob Hofmeyr.
Minutes of the first AGM of the Conservancy held on 18th December 2009, were proposed by Neil Wallace and seconded by W Balcomb
AGM 2010
The next AGM should not be combined with that of ZBRRA and ZNW and should be held before the school holidays in December 2010 and it was suggested that our next AGM should be combined with a function to attract members.

Committee members for year 2010 appear on the new letter head and are
Chairman K.Achtzehn, nominated by N Wallace and seconded by P Saville
Vice Chairman – N Wallace, nominated by W Balcomb and seconded by C Hatt
Sec/Treasurer – W Balcomb, nominated by K Achtzehn and seconded by N Wallace
Functions co-ordinator- C Hatt nominated by W Balcomb and seconded by P Saville.
Farmer’s representative – P Saville nominated by N Wallace and seconded by K Achtzehn

Peter Saville was complimented for his interest and attendance of Conservancy meetings. He is to ask if Tongaat Huletts would like to be represented on our committee.
Wendy is to send an updated constitution to Graham Edwards.
Membership status
All ZBRRA members are automatically members of the ZC – no membership fee, but ZBRRA would fund conservancy work within the village.
Membership fee for others R150 per annum. Application forms are available on request
Peter Saville to send application forms to interested farmers in the Nonoti, Tugela area. Farmers to be included were Michelle de Rauville, Nigel Lovett, Mike Zunckel and Tony van Raalte. Once the membership is formalised a circular newsletter should be sent out to keep members in the loop.
Blythedale conservancy
Fokko Fokkens had reported that the Blythedale conservancy had collapsed and asked that we consider consolidating this into our area. N Wallace considered this a sensible long term view. The Zinkwazi conservancy intends increasing its area to cover more of the surrounding farming area.
K Achtzehn said that the conservancy should be seen as a vehicle to facilitate projects. It is hoped to include the expertise of individuals such as Tim Condon, Shelley Hedges and Peter Ardington. Bing Comrie and Fokko Fokkens are to be asked to formalise the membership of Blythedale’s conservancy
Stewardship
Feedback received from Andrew Whitley from Wildlands indicated that, as a result of our submission, our area has been accepted as one of 10 in KZN for 2010, which will be allocated funds, manpower and will be pursued as a priority. Money needs to be sourced for groundwork biodiversity surveys.
Honoury Officers function. Peter Saville stated that he’s like to hold a function for Honoury Officers to raise money in March or April. Neil Wallace suggested he consult Heidi Mocke, the Wildlands Trust events manager for advice.
Working for the Coast. At the last iLembe meeting Alex Briggs stated that the funds will be available in March 2010. The delay was with DEAT and not Ezemvelo. A B confirmed to WB later that March is still the date funds will be made available.
Zululand Birding Route. K Achtzehn attended a meeting where stakeholders agreed that the Zululand Birding Route will become an independent entity, but would still have the support of Birdlife SA.
Nursery. N Wallace stated that the AIP work is to be our primary concern. Property owners to be notified that they would need to fund the staff clearing their land after the initial 6 months follow-up. A decision is to be made as to commercializing the nursery. This would require it to be registered. Alternately trees and unusual plants could be propagated for non profit.
Functions. C Hatt to identify interesting outings in the area, suitable speakers to host functions – such as talks on trees, birds, snakes, swallow watching, walks along coast for families. The nursery toilet to be completed so that it may be used as a centre for such functions.
