Mandela Day - 18th July 2010

August 3rd, 2010

Dear Zinkwazi residents,

Nelson Mandela Day

Many of you might have read the pullout in the Sunday Times – in between all the wonderful soccer hype – drawing attention to Nelson Mandela Day and providing some inspiring thoughts on how to honour this great man and in so doing also continue the wondeful spirit of ‘ubuntu’ which has been so obvious in these past 5 weeks.

1. Providing food for the 28 orphans being cared for by surrogate mothers and gogos in Zamani village.

The children have been identified by Pastor Nelson Mkhize and All Saints Anglican Church in Darnall and are provided monthly with family food packs.
Last week, as a result of a plea to Pep Stores for assistance, the school-going kids amongst the orphans were taken to Stanger to buy new school clothes [the first ‘new’ clothes some of them had ever been given] and as can be seen in the pic the excitement was palpable! Thanks to the generosity of Pep Stores.

In the same manner as last year, we will place a trailer at the Junction parking area onFriday 16 July and Saturday 17 July [ that’s this week!] to receive your food donations. The true spirit of Nelson Mandela Day is to be actively involved and so we don’t wish to ask for money but should you be out of town or not be in a position to participate and a cash donation is your only way of showing your desire to be a part of the day then please contact me on the email and/or cell provided below.
Suggested foods: Maize, sugar, cooking oil, soaps, powdered juices, samp, sugar beans, salt, toothbrushes, tinned foods etc.[ please no perishable foods].
2. Providing stationery for the Bongimfundo Primary School [ a farm school situated 1km behind the chicken farm ]

Stationery requirements:
Supplies of pens, pencils, rulers, erasers and ribbon [to tie pens around necks!]

Should you wish to, in a spirit of community involvement, we will be paying the school a visit on Tuesday morning 20 July to hand over the collected stationery and interact with the kids. Meet at the carpark at 09.30.

With thanks,
Zinkwazi resident

Mandela Day plea from Cliff Hatt

July 29th, 2009

Cliff Hatt arrived in Zinkwazi some three years ago from Josi where he had been one of those indoor business men……what a transformation has taken place.  Cliff has become one of the most active residents in the communtiy - a mover and shaker when it comes to action and particularly outdoor activities.  His artistic photos are in our gallery - must add more soon, he plays an active roll in the conservancy and in the community he is the first to put up his hand to assist our neighbouring township - Zamane.  This is one of his projects  - I will add his letter ….what a success this was.  Well done Cliff !!

Dear fellow Zinkwazi and Darnall resident,

Less than 90 minutes of your time on
Nelson Mandela Day

On this Saturday 18 July, Nelson Mandela turns 91.  It also heralds the commencement of Nelson Mandela Day on which all peoples worldwide, but particularly South Africans, are requested to give
90 minutesof their time to uplift a community in one way or another.
Like me, as is usually the case, you may have wondered what you could do to make a difference or how you might dedicate this 90 minutes to capture the spirit of ‘ubuntu’ and so honour this call.

I have an idea – in fact a cause – which you too might see as worthy and fitting in the circumstances.

In the small community of Zamani positioned alongside the Darnall Sugar Mill [Zamani in Zulu means ‘trying’ – such a poignant and hopefilled name] a group of about 24 orphans [or vulnerable children] have been identified by Pastor Nelson Mkhize, a new christian resident of Zamani who is currently being assisted in his ministry by the Anglican Church in Darnall. This group of orphans, which is probably only the tip of the iceberg, is spread amongst 4 households in which adoptive mothers are caring for their needs. Their ages range from 6 mths to 16 yrs.
This is how I suggest we use our 90 minutes. We take a little time to look through our cupboards and find any non –perishable foodstuffs
that we can afford to do without [see suggested list below] and then …

- TAKE THEM UP TO THE ZINKWAZI CAFÉ AND HARDWARE STORE THIS SATURDAY 18 JULY WHERE YOU WILL FIND A TRAILER POSITIONED IN THE CAR PARK FOR THAT PURPOSE. THE TRAILER WILL BE THERE FROM 08.30AM TO 12.30AM. SHOULD YOU NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT THEN GIVE ME A CALL AND I WILL COLLECT ON THE SUNDAY.

The supplies will then be taken to Pastor Nelson to be distributed in an organised way in the following week.
For the many generous people in Zinkwazi and Darnall I know that this is yet another request to give but I do ask that on this occasion we do so in honour of an amazing man – Nelson Mandela - and hopefully take a small step in bridging the gaps that we are so aware of – and perhaps, for those who can afford to, it could become an opportunity for ongoing support by one community for another.

Although any non-perishable foods will be gratefully received here is a LIST OF SUGGESTED ITEMS
Maize-meal, rice, sugar, salt, sugar beans, curry powders, flour, powdered milk, pastas, macaronis, baby foods, porridges, soya mince, tea.
Canned beans,fish,jams,peanut butter etc.

Apologies should you receive this same request from different sources – I have endeavoured to spread the communication as wide as possible and I would be grateful were you to pass it on to any person or group whom you feel might not know about this opportunity to participate.
If you receive this mail at work then please print a copy now to take home to share with your family.
Please phone me should you have any queries or wish to find out more information on these children.
With grateful thanks,
Zinkwazi resident

Zamani Orphans food collection
22/07/09

Dear Zinkwazi and Darnall residents,
The generous response at short notice for this appeal was humbling.
The trailer was filled to capacity and spontaneous and generous cash donations were made including that from a Zinkwazi homeowner based in JHB.
I think it speaks for itself when I say that 24 orphans will be fed staple food for 3 to 4 months as a result of this spirit of giving and caring for a community in need.
Thank you for honouring this call.
A resident,
Zinkwazi

Should anyone like to find out more about this cause or feel called to support it in an ongoing manner, your call would be gratefully received

Zinkwazi Cafe update June 09

July 7th, 2009

Zinkwazi Café
June 2009

Zinkwazi Café was opened by ourselves, Leizl Simmonds & Heidi Gaul on the 3rd of December 2009. Our little shop has gone from strength to strength over the past 6 months and we wish to thank all the community members, homeowners and visitors to the village, for all the support that we have received.

We are proud to boast that our little shop has quite an extensive selection of stock and we are always open to any suggestions. As the shop has only been running for a short time, we are tweaking the stock on a monthly basis.

Currently we stock most household necessities, such as bread, milk, household cleaning materials, toiletries, basic first aid items, sunblock and of course sweets and ice creams, as well as the good old 2L ice creams for a little indulgence.

During holiday season it is obviously a little easier to stock a wider range of fresh vegetables and fruit, but we do have the regular requirements like potatoes, tomatoes, onions etc on a daily basis. We have recently started stocking some frozen vegetables, frozen chips, whole chickens and chicken pieces. We do stock meat, but freeze it to ensure its freshness.

We also have a very exciting range of home cooked frozen meals from TRACEY’S KITCHEN. They are top quality, reasonably priced, delicious meals, so for those who want a night off from cooking, pop in and purchase one of our meals.

We have introduced Lizzard and Lizzy Clothing. The range consists of some lovely costumes, board shorts, Tees, slops and beach towels. Our small but extensive fishing tackle corner has all that most avid fishermen will need whether you are fishing from the shore, lagoon or deep sea.

We provide an `internet shopping service’ for those who would like to have their fridges stocked with the basics on arrival at their holiday home/accommodation. Email us on zinkwazicafe@telkomsa.net and we will arrange for your shopping to be delivered and unpacked at your home/accommodation.

We look forward to seeing you at the shop.

Yours in shopping

Zinkwazi Hardware update June 09

July 7th, 2009

Zinkwazi Hardware
June 09

A NEW START…

Many would have heard by now that we, GLENN & TRACEY have bought the hardware store in Zinkwazi. We hail from Gauteng, Johannesburg, aka Gangsters Paradise. Having owned a holiday house in Zinkwazi for the past 5 years our dream was always to settle in the village and offer our children (10 year old triplets, Vicky-May, Jethro and Travis) a better life, and here we are.

Despite a few cosmetic changes to the shop, ie: moving the counter, painting and adding more shelf space, the shop remains a good local spot for all your hardware requirements.

We’d like to remind you all of what we have on offer besides the obvious….
·       BUILDING: We carry cement, bags of stone and sand, bricks for emergencies, tile adhesive/grouts and other basic building material BUT remember if you’re doing renovations and need bigger amounts we will order in and get supplies delivered to your doorstep.
·       PAINT: We stock the Decade range and can match any colour.
·       DOG FOOD: We stock a great brand of dog food, Lifestyle, it comes in 25kg and 8kg bags and is proving quite popular with the local hounds.
·       CLEANING: 5 litre containers of your basic cleaning liquids (dish wash liquid and all purpose cleaner)
·       STAFF PACKS: We stock a basic food pack (mielie meal, samp, rice, salt etc – packs may vary) This is great for those of you living out of the village and have staff living on your properties, they can just pop into us and get their packs as and when needed.
·       BIRD SEED: Wild bird seed and a really yummy parrot mix
·       GARDEN: Compost, potting soil, lawn dressing and a good assortment of fertilizers as well as your necessary hoses, fittings, spades etc
·       BEACH: We stock an assortment of beach umbrellas, boogie boards, toys for the beach (buckets/spades etc), fishing nets, beach chairs and much needed sun block for that harsh African sun.
·       POOL: Chlorine, HTH, month mates, salt, sand, we also get great specials on pool equipment like creepy crawleys etc. So look out for those.

·       BITS AND BOBS and other interesting facts:
·       Charcoal, fire-lighters, mini braais
·       We refill gas bottles (Bring in your old bottle and we’ll swop it for a full one)
·       Kettles, irons, two plates stoves
·       Cooler boxes and picnic back packs
·       Tool sets
·       Kiddies birthday cards and last minute birthday presents & activity packs for kids on rainy    days
·       Mozzie spray, mozzie nets
·       Extension plugs and cables,
·       Brooms, mops, rakes
·       Timbercare,
·       Torches, batteries, light bulbs
·       Plumbing fittings
·       Electrical supplies
·       Padlocks, glues
·       Nuts and bolts, spanners and drill bits and ……

·       SO much more.

We’re open week-days from 07h30 – 16h30, Saturday from 08h00 – 13h00 and will also be opening on public holidays from 09h00 – 13h00.

Please pop in to say hi when you’re next in the village and give us your feed-back on what you think of the changes to the store and also let us know if there is anything specific you would like us to stock and we will do our utmost to supply it for you.

We look forward to meeting you.

Our regards

Zinkwazi Cafe

November 30th, 2008

Dear Resident

We are delighted that Heidi Gaul and Leilz Simmons - yes the same pro-active lady who has cared so well for Claudette Smit these past months - will be opening a convenience store at the Mini Mall early in December. Craig and Donna du Bernard will remain downstairs with their hardware.  The upstairs of the building is in for a re-vamp with office space for Engela Wium’s Driftwood Letting agency and Gordon Barnard’s Fish Eagle Estates.

We wish Leizl and Heidi Good Luck.  Please read their letter of introduction to the community  - WB

Dear All Homeowners,

Leizl Simmonds & Heidi Gaul are proud to announce the opening of Zinkwazi Café, in the first week of December 2008. We have taken over the shop and hope to have an exclusive little convenience store with a difference.

We will be stocking fresh vegetables and meat, as well as your normal daily requirements. As one knows we are not in a position to compete with the larger retail outlets in the area, but we are going to ensure that prices remain as competitive as possible, one must never loose sight that this is a convenience store.

We hope to operate on a database system where we are able to send out SMS’s and emails without becoming too much of a bother, to inform residents of any specials or new stock that may have arrived. We are also going to be providing a small scale internet shopping experience, where holiday home owners and residents are able to contact us and we will shop and deliver all their necessary groceries. What a pleasure! Having driven for many kilometres and arriving to a fridge stocked with all the necessities!

Please contact us on the following numbers for any orders or queries your may have:
Leizl 072 930 7433
Heidi 079 506 1180

We are open to any suggestions, which the community may have on ways to improve our service. Our business hours will be 07h00 to 19h00 in holiday season, 07h00 to 18h00 out of season.

Hope to see you all at Zinkwazi Café

Yours in shopping

Leizl & Heidi
