I retired to live in Zinkwazi since 2004, after having owned property for many years. Through marriage I am a member of one of the original Zinkwazi families. Matriculated 1957, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet. I worked for the Standard Bank for two years then became youth pastor in the Methodist Church in Kroonstad. Subsequently took a BA Hons and UED at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg. Taught at Kearsney College for four years and then at Hilton College for twelve years. Recruited to the University of the Witwatersrand, where I began in the field of academic personnel management, ending up as Head of Personnel. I then moved to the job of Co-ordinator and Adviser in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. In the 90s I was engaged particularly in change management but with a variety of specific projects. While still working at Wits I was ordained as a self-supporting minister in the Anglican Church (1997). When I retired from Wits in 2000 I became Rector of Bez Valley Parish, on the fringes of the mid-city. I retired again 2004, when we moved to Zinkwazi Beach, KZN.In January 1983 I married Marion Brain (daughter of the late A B Theunissen and widow of a very close friend). Marion is a graduate of Rhodes, UNISA and Wits, a personnel professional, one of the first women ordained in the Anglican Church; thereafter Chaplain to St Mary’s Diocesan School, Waverley.Active in the local church, bird-watching, reading and reviewing books, ZBRRA and bowls.

I was born in Durban on 9th October,1938 In 1947 after the 2WW my parents immigrated to Northern Rhodesia. Ndola which was the railway junction that transported the then important cargo Copper. Ndola was a business and Industrial Town and boasted an Oil refinery and Sugar Refinery. I did my last years education in South Africa at the St Dominics Academy of Newcastle. I was employed by a local Newspaper, Northern News (Ndola) which then split into Rhodesian Printers and I grew with the firm . It was here that I met and married Roy Bowton. Due to the policy that no married couples were to work in the same firm, I resigned and worked for Old Mutual. We moved to Kitwe where Roy was made Advertising Manager for Northern News and I cared for our three children. We later went into our own business making Rubber Stamps. In 1972 we returned to South Africa where we opened a Rubber Stamp business and Stationers in Pinetown. Roy later went into partnership in new company called Concorde Printing. I ran the 2nd Westville Cubs for five years. In Westville, I played an active role in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church and sang in the choir for thirty years. I worked as a rep. for Steelbank Merchants in Pintown for 20 years in the Pinetown Pietermaritzburg and Queensborough areas. I called on Engineers, Industries allied in the sheet metal work and Contractors and builders, it was a man’s world and I knew my product well and was very succesfull. I retired in 1996. Roy retired in 2002 and live in a house built by our son-in-law. We have never been happier !
